Polly

Hello, Iā€™m Polly, a third year Classics student at the University of Oxford, and recently was awarded a 1st in my Honours Moderations, winning the De Paravicini Prize for Latin. I studied Latin (A*) and Greek (A*) for A Level along with History Pre-U (D1) and completed a history and classics-based EPQ (A*).

I love both the language and the literature components of Classics and I believe that I can help students excel in Latin and Greek by focusing on the core grammatical principles and learning about the logic of the language rather than learning solely through memorisation, as well as helping them develop a genuine interest in the literature by understanding its themes and how style enhances meaning.

I think that tutoring is an individual process, with the tutor and pupil forging a relationship and finding a specific method of communication which enables the pupil to truly understand the concepts rather than just memorising information they are taught. I have tutored a range of subjects, and have also undertaken weekly volunteer teaching and tutoring for the past 5 years, which has helped me explore different teaching methods for different pupils and learning styles. I am happy to teach both Latin and Greek up to A Level and can help with applications to study Classics at university.
