John

Hi, I’m John. I’m currently 2 years into a 4 year DPhil (PhD) at Oxford, where I seek to apply Machine Learning to Quantum Chemistry. Prior to this, I came 4th in my year in the Oxford undergraduate Chemistry course, and also have a Distinction for an MSc in Computer Science.

At A-Level, I studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry (all A). I also completed AS-Level Latin (A) and an Extended Project Qualification (A). I also have extensive experience in the Maths Olympiad and UKMT, which I participated in every year from school years 6-13.

I am excited about sharing my passion for knowledge and, more importantly, learning with others. My personal tutoring philosophy is that a tutor should be so much more than just an interactive textbook! Rather than merely being a source of information, they should be responsible for helping the tutee understand the wider context and significance of the subject (and hence instil passion and a desire for learning more), and also for helping their tutees learn how to learn. By successfully meeting these two goals, the tutee is able to help themselves more (and importantly wants to do so), and more advanced and mature discussions and learning can happen in an accelerated fashion.

I’m comfortable teaching maths and science to all ages, and in particular (Further) Maths, Chemistry and Physics at A-Level. I also have experience helping students prepare for admissions interviews, and am keen to pass that on!
