Tyler, Physics - University of Oxford

Hello! I'm Tyler, a Physics Master's Graduate from the University of Oxford. I completed the 4-year MPhys Physics course at St Peter's College and loved every second of it; whether in the lab working on my Master's project on Spectroscopy and Lunar satellites, or in the lecturer's office for a tutorial on the mathematical framework of Particle Physics. I was also awarded the St Peter's Society award in 2024 for my contributions to college life, and I remain one of three Honorary Members for Life of St Peter's College JCR, showing that my strengths also extended to helping others and fostering a friendly and nurturing environment. I attended Peter Symonds College to complete my A-levels, achieving A*'s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics, and an A in Computer Science, as well as achieving a 1590 on the College Board SAT (800 Math, 790 Reading) which placed me well above the 99th percentile. Since graduating from the University, I have stayed in Oxford: first working for the University of Oxford running their Student Football (Soccer) Programme for a year, and now as a Football Coach and Maths/Physics Tutor while applying for industry roles and further studying opportunities. This time after graduating has really honed my personal pedagogy, since I have been able to teach both in-person and remotely; with young adults and teenagers; and across vastly different yet surprisingly applicable fields, all allowing me to discover what 'works' and how to ensure complete understanding.

Throughout all 4 years of my studies (and the just over a year since), I have consistently and regularly tutored. I now have more than 5 years of experience across a variety of levels and exam boards/specifications in both Mathematics and Physics, as well as University Admissions tests, interviews, and personal statements. This experience has been incredibly rewarding for me, as I've seen things 'click' in single sessions in the short-term and discovered that students I have tutored have gone on to achieve strong grades and gain admission to very competitive schools, so it is something that I am looking to continue for as long as possible!

The main tenet of my approach is to develop understanding. I have found that, from students studying for STEM GCSEs to those applying to University courses, once the concept is understood, the exam technique comes at a rapid pace. I therefore focus on developing the underlying intuition whenever we start a new topic using previous areas, real-world situations, or even analogies from separate disciplines and interests, before helping the student apply this better understanding to their exam board's past exam questions. I strongly believe that ensuring a complete understanding of a topic before shaping a student's thinking within the confines of the specific mark scheme is the most productive and efficient way to generate success.
