Hi, I’m Tom a current second year study studying BA (HONS) Economics and Management at Hertford College Oxford. I went to a normal state school in Leeds (Benton Park school) where I studied Business, Economics and Maths at A-level. I have been involved in sport all my life from competitive swimming to rugby and cricket, where I am the current vice-captain of my college rugby team.

I am not a traditional Oxford student in the sense that I know what it is like to not get a great deal of support in school. My lessons in school were often quite disrupted, with generally no real focus or contribution from peers. I didn’t even sit a round of mocks for my GCSEs due to the roof of the main building collapsing and school being closed! I therefore know what it is like to not have great support at school and had to often figure things out on my own. Regardless of your situation, my tutoring will help you achieve your goals by giving you a supportive space to ask any questions you may have no matter how dumb you may think they are (there really is no such thing as a dumb question!).

I have found in my personal experience supporting students with Economics and Business that they often know a lot more than they take credit for - it just takes some non-judgemental conversation to unlock that knowledge! There are two main reasons why students don’t achieve top marks: exam technique and knowledge. Exam technique is easily fixed; I have seen students go from Cs to As in one assessment due to them implementing proper exam technique, making it easy for the examiner to tick off the criteria needed for top marks. In the case of a lack of knowledge we can go through the parts of the spec that you don’t understand fully as fast or as slow as we need to.

You will quickly learn that I am not some scary tutor who gets annoyed if you don’t get things quite right but that I react positively to students not getting things quite right - it identifies areas that need work!
