Tilly, Biomedical Sciences - University of Cambridge

Hi, I'm Tilly! I studied for an MPhil in Biological Sciences at Girton College, Cambridge (Distinction), having previously completed a degree in Medical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh (First Class). Before starting my PhD in Biomedical Education, I also gained professional experience in medical law, giving me insight into how science translates into real world healthcare and decision making.

I tutor A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology, IB Biology and Psychology, GCSE Sciences, and Medicine and Oxbridge admissions. Over the past four years, I've worked primarily with A-Level and IB students, helping many secure places at Medicine and Oxbridge.

One of the things I enjoy most about science is how many different disciplines it brings together. Across my studies and research, I've worked on projects spanning analytical chemistry, cancer research, informatics and bioethics, and I love helping students see how ideas connect across subjects rather than learning them in isolation.

At A-Level, I studied Chemistry (A), Biology (A*), Psychology (A*) and completed an EPQ (A*), while also playing trumpet in both the orchestra and jazz band.

It was really at university that I found my stride, once I was in an environment that suited the way I think and learn. That experience taught me how much the right approach can matter, and it's shaped the way I tutor. Every student learns differently, so I focus on finding strategies that work for the individual rather than relying on a one size fits all approach.

As part of my PhD, I teach Biomedical Sciences students in both Edinburgh and Zhejiang, China, covering subjects including biochemistry, physiology, developmental biology and medicinal biosciences. My research focuses on how students learn complex scientific concepts, so I use evidence from educational psychology to design sessions that are engaging, memorable and tailored to each student's needs.

When it comes to university applications, I believe in a holistic approach. Rather than simply helping students tick boxes, I encourage them to explore their interests and strengths and find a university capable of nurturing them.

For me, the best tutoring is a genuine partnership. I use a range of approaches, from visual learning and active recall to game based learning, to make challenging topics easier to understand and remember. More than anything, I hope students leave sessions feeling confident, curious and excited about where their interests might take them next.
