Sian, English and French - University of Oxford

Hi! My name is Siân and I graduated from St Anne's College Oxford in 2023 with a BA in English and French. I am currently studying for my MA in Drama. Having studied these subjects alongside Politics at A Level, I am well placed to tutor across the arts and humanities. I have been tutoring since I was about 16, starting with local families that wanted support for their children, and then branching out into online teaching during my time at Oxford. Over the years I have supported a wide range of students; my experience covers almost everything from young children learning French from scratch, to Oxbridge entrance preparation. I have also built up my skillset by working with the outreach department at St Anne's - I am passionate about widening access to higher education.

My tutoring style is all about being adaptable to the student and boosting their confidence. The main benefit of one-to-one tutoring is that it can be tailored to the specific student’s needs, and that is what I try to do with everyone I work with. Every student is different, so I like to make my lessons bespoke and focus on whatever it is they feel they need to work on in order to go into their exams with confidence. Throughout my time as a student and as a teacher, I have built up a solid supply of tools that I can share, no matter the level we will be working at or aiming for.

I have a real passion for literature and languages. I have lived abroad and had so many wonderful opportunities through learning a foreign language and reading widely, so I hope to pass on this passion to my students. Discovering the world through the wonderful texts and words that we will look at together can be a joy, so I hope to encourage this outlook through my lessons. I try to make them as discursive, interesting and fun as possible. My students should feel able to make mistakes and think outside the box with me. Of course results are important, and I always push my students to achieve highly, but I also want them to learn to love these subjects as much as I do.
