Scarlett - French and German, University of Cambridge

Hello! I’m Scarlett, and I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge, where I read French and German at Gonville & Caius College (First Class). During my time at Cambridge, I was awarded multiple college scholarships for academic performance in examinations and was awarded a competitive international exchange at Sciences Po in Paris. Whilst at school, I was successful in a number of external academic competitions, including winning the Oxford German Olympiad and interschool German debating competitions, as well as receiving recognition in Cambridge essay competitions.

I have been tutoring for more than four years now, both privately and through organisations focused on widening access to education. This experience encompasses both long-term, regular academic support and targeted, exam-focused preparation. I have worked with students across a range of levels, helping them to build confidence, improve exam technique, and achieve strong academic outcomes. My experience also includes ad hoc support for school, university and job applications, where I help students refine their written work and prepare for interviews. Across all of this, I tailor lessons closely to individual students, breaking down complex material into manageable structures and supporting them in producing precise, high-quality work.

A distinctive feature of my teaching is a focus on developing both analytical precision and intellectual independence. I encourage students to move beyond memorisation by understanding the underlying structures of language, literature and sources, and by engaging critically with material. Where appropriate, I introduce more advanced concepts beyond the curriculum to deepen understanding and make the subject more engaging. I place particular emphasis on clarity of thought and expression, so that students feel confident tackling unfamiliar questions and articulating their ideas effectively under pressure. My sessions are always tailored to the individual, but consistently aim to develop more independent, sophisticated approaches to learning.
