PHOebe

Hi! I’m Phoebe, a third year Biologist at New College, Oxford. I received a first (distinction) and was placed 4th in my year for second-year exams. At school I studied Biology (A*), Chemistry (A*), Maths (A) and Geography (A*) at A level.

Over the past 3 years I have gained over 150 hours experience tutoring children of all ages from 9-18, predominantly helping with Science GCSEs and A-Levels but also Oxbridge applications and 11 and 13+ exams. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of these sessions, particularly the process of finding a spark that the pupil has for the subject and turning it into focused, accurate work and seeing the end outcome in results.

For me, tutoring is about helping the pupil understand the concept and knowledge rather than learning purely to pass an exam, as this will enable them to develop a passion for the subject and succeed in the long run. Secondly, I believe tutoring should be highly individual, and I enjoy finding the aspects of the subject the pupil is most interested in and combining this with areas the pupil needs to work on, to achieve the fulfilling results. Science and Biology in particular lends itself well to extend the discussion beyond the syllabus and classroom learning to foster a genuine interest in the subject, and this is how my love for biology began.
