Mya, Biomedicine - University of Oxford

Hello, I’m Mya! I recently graduated from Oxford, where I studied Biomedical Sciences at St Edmund Hall College. This is a four-year integrated master’s programme, and I followed the Neuroscience pathway, focusing on systems and cellular Neuroscience, as well as endocrinology and immunology. I loved my time at Oxford and got involved in a number of societies. I was secretary of the Biomedical Sciences society, Event Coordinator for Oxford Women in STEM, and Access Officer for my college JCR. I was also fortunate to receive the SEHA President’s prize, which enabled me to volunteer in Indonesia, teaching English. Additionally, I have volunteered as an English teacher at an Epilepsy Foundation in Kenya, furthering my passion for education and healthcare.

Before coming to university, I achieved three A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Fine Art A-Level, as well as nine Grade 9s at GCSE. With over four years of tutoring experience, I have helped students with A-Level and IB Biology and Chemistry, and provided support through the admissions process, involving helping to refine personal statements, supporting with the BMAT, and performing mock-style interview sessions. I have supported students applying for Biology, Biomedical Sciences and Biochemistry at university, and these students have gone on to obtain offers from Oxbridge.

My tutoring style is tailored to each student, identifying strategies that work best for them; whether that be focusing on practice questions or creating diagrams to condense complex information into a memorable format. I want to foster a tutoring environment where students are comfortable to ask questions and fully understand the content before moving on. In terms of admissions preparation, my mock-style interview questions are challenging yet build in complexity so that prior knowledge can be applied to more abstract ideas. I approach tutoring as an opportunity to adapt to the individual needs of the student as I believe long-lasting learning is based on a trusting and supporting relationship between tutor and student, and that success is rooted in this!
