Lucy - Psychology and Philosophy, University of Oxford

Hi! I’m Lucy, a 4th-year student at St Edmund hall, University of Oxford, in my final year of an integrated master’s (MSci) degree in Psychology and Philosophy. I received high 2:1 / first class marks overall in my second and third year exams, resulting in me being awarded open scholarships by my college for both years, as well as receiving an additional award in my second year which specifically recognised my hard work in Philosophy. Before university, I achieved three A*s at A Level in Psychology, Sociology, and Spanish, and top grades across all my GCSEs.

Throughout my degree, I have specialised in Clinical Psychology, including a first class paper on the understanding and treatment of emotional disorders, a first class dissertation on the influence of social media on eating disorders, and a ‘Current Opinions Review’ on the impact of online over-pathologisation and self-diagnosis on the youth mental health crisis, which I have just submitted as part of my fourth year coursework; and Developmental Psychology, including my current master’s project which aims to investigate associations between autistic traits and impulsivity in 20- & 36-month-olds. I also took exams in the Philosophy of Logic & Language, the Philosophy of Cognitive Science, and Feminist Theory, as well as excelling and improving my skills in statistical analysis, including using software such as Microsoft Excel, R, Python, and SPSS. Post-graduation, I aim to work in an Assistant Psychologist, Mental Health / SEND Support, or other clinical care-related role, with a view to eventually apply to the NHS Doctorate in Clinical Psychologist, and qualify as a Clinical Psychologist.

My tutorial approach primarily focuses on making learning as simple as possible. I understand first-hand how overwhelming it can be to receive vast amounts of complex information all at once, and how much this can make it hard to persevere with studying. Therefore, I tend to approach tutoring formulaically, precisely and simply setting out information in an intuitive and concise way such that it is as easy to remember and understand as possible. I also understand that each individual has vastly different learning styles which I strive to be adaptable to. So, my priority is always to begin by ensuring that I understand the student’s needs, aims, and approach when it comes to learning, and try my very best to adapt my tutoring style to accommodate these.
