Joy Chang - English Language and Literature, University of Oxford

Hi there! My name is Joy. I'm currently a third-year undergraduate at the University of Oxford, studying English Language and Literature, and I love to teach just as much as I love to learn.

I began tutoring back in my junior year of high school. I offered free essay support services to my peers in classes such as AP Lang, AP Lit, APUSH, AP Gov, and more. Ever since, I've been continuously tutoring, teaching, and mentoring, always with the same goal in mind: to connect with my students and enable them to succeed.

I have taught at several educational institutions, working with children from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade in common core, creative writing, art, and more. My favorite experience was teaching the Institute for Excellence in Writing curriculum to groups of students in grades 6-7, integrating technology, games, and peer learning into my lessons. In addition to formal teaching positions, I tutor in my free time and provide application support to students. As of now, I have over 4 years of teaching and tutoring experience in various institutional and cultural settings, with lots of positive feedback from supervisors, families, and most importantly students. My teaching experience, combined with my rigorous academic training at Oxford, makes me a tutor who has a thorough understand both of how to teach and what to teach.

I follow the methods of differentiated instruction, which means that I am intentional in assessing the needs of each individual student and responding to those needs as necessary. I also believe in providing thorough, quantitative feedback to students to help them think critically about their own work without getting overly caught up in numbers or bogged down by mistakes. In essence, I see, respect, and value my students as individuals, and this approach allows me to build positive, safe relationships that encourage learning and confidence-building.
