Jamie Walker - Biology, University of Oxford

Hello! My name is Jamie, and I graduated with a first class degree from Oxford in 2023. I spent four amazing years at Somerville College immersed in the MBiol Integrated Master’s in Biology. This involved three years studying a Bachelor’s, before a final fourth year completing an independent research project. I loved being able to roam broadly, synthesising perspectives across biological disciplines in order to approach pressing global challenges. My modules ranged from human immunology, to evolutionary ecology and plant molecular biology. For the fourth year project, I conducted an in-situ warming experiment at a carbon-rich wetland in order to investigate how decomposition and invertebrate food-webs might be impacted by climate change. My thesis was awarded a first. I was also awarded College scholarships for academic excellence at each year of my degree.

Before Oxford, I took A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English. Prior to that, my GCSE results consisted of all A*s, and I also won a scholarship for the top results during my senior school entry exams. Alongside my school academic career, I was a keen musician - reaching Grade 8 in Trombone - and actor, with multiple leading roles in school productions.

Since leaving university, I have worked in several organisations leading nature-based education experiences for children of varying ages. Joining Earthwatch Europe after graduating, I designed bespoke courses for primary-age children at a local youth club, teaching about the ecology of different habitats at a local nature reserve. For RE-PEAT, I have led projects across Europe educating young people about peatlands. And in 2025 I was the Ecology Lead at Farm and Wilderness Summer Camps in Vermont, delivering in-depth sessions on forestry and wetland monitoring for teenagers.

My tutoring style emerges from this rigorous academic training and experience-led educational work. I support the curiosity of science students to flourish by contextualising the curriculum in the real world. I encourage students to hone their eye for detail and critical thinking, while placing topics within their broader context.
