Our Tutors - Hannah Radley
Hannah - English Language and Literature, University of Oxford
Hello! I’m Hannah, and I have just finished studying for my Masters, following straight on from my undergraduate degree. I hold a First Class Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Merton College, Oxford and a Master of Studies in English 650-1550 from Corpus Christi College, Oxford. My Masters gave me the opportunity to dive deeper into the medieval literature I had enjoyed so much at undergraduate level, and spend time dedicated to this unique and fascinating aspect of English studies. I had a wonderful time at Oxford, and during my time at Merton was lucky enough to be Co-President of Merton College Poetry Society and Secretary of Merton English Society.
Before Oxford, I studied A Levels in English Literature, History and Politics, in all of which I attained A*. I also attended Model United Nations in Oxford, and received an award for Best Position Paper on my committee. During my final year of Sixth Form, I was asked to tutor a younger student who was struggling with A Level Politics, and seeing her gain confidence in the subject was truly rewarding. I have been lucky enough to receive invitations back to my school to speak to prospective Oxbridge applicants and give them some guidance for the application process. I am interested in state school access to higher education, and have worked at Merton open days as part of this. As my school was academically selective, I also have experience sitting 11+ examinations, and would be happy to tutor students looking to sit 11+ exams.
My approach to teaching is informed by the Oxford tutorial system, prioritising flexibility of thought and a conversational, personalised approach to learning. My postgraduate research is highly interdisciplinary, using material culture and historical approaches to illuminate our understanding of medieval literature. Helping students make similar connections between the subjects they are studying can enrich their understanding and help them to develop new perspectives on their work.
Alongside 11+ preparation, I would be happy to teach A Level English Literature, History and Politics, as well as GCSE English Language and Literature, History and Geology. I would also be happy to work with younger students of any age across the humanities.
Outside of academics, I am an avid Doctor Who fan and enjoy seeing live music and spending time in nature. I am also a keen amateur Earth scientist and regularly go out on field trips around the UK.
