Greg, History - University of Oxford

Hello! I’m Greg. I recently graduated with a First Class BA in History (Merton College, Oxford) and am currently in preparations to begin a masters’ degree in medieval history in September 2026. I took full advantage of the academic world in Oxford, winning an exhibitionership at Merton after my Preliminary exams and gaining a first class in the final exams, most notably for my dissertation on monastic gender in late medieval Syon Abbey. My sixth form days were spent studying for an International Baccalaureate diploma, for which I attained 40/45 points (equivalent to 4 A* at A-level), including a 6/7 in modern world history, a 7/7 in English, a 7/7 in Geography, and a 7/7 in Environmental science.

I have been an intermittent tutor since I was in year 10 in 2019, when I was a volunteer within my secondary school helping struggling year 7s to get a leg-up on their reading and English skills. Later, in sixth form, I completed work experience as a GCSE and IB teaching assistant across the humanities: English, Religious Studies, History and Geography. I am pleased to offer private online tutoring on any of those subjects for GCSE, A-level, and IB, as well as university admissions.

Living with multiple complex learning needs (including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and an auditory processing disorder) meant that, before my IB exams, I was not the most intuitive learner. Before sixth form, I struggled enormously to get to grips with what exam boards expected of me, and how to realise the potential of my thoughts. I am indebted both to the attention of several committed teachers and tutors and to the holistic and often one-to-one tutorial system at Oxford for having helped me so much in overcoming or working around those difficulties.

With this in mind, perhaps my most distinctive approach in tutoring is the understanding and empathy which I can bring to pupils who are struggling with a variety of academic issues, from exam and revision technique to general intellectual confidence. I ground my teaching in tackling specific anxieties and worries, building confidence off of the things a pupil is interested in and encouraging them to make links between subjects and between their strengths and weaknesses. I believe that this has a hugely beneficial impact on both the confidence of the pupil and their understanding of the core concepts which are often in common across the humanities.
