George, History Ancient and Modern - University of Oxford

Hi! I’m George, a second year undergrad at The Queen’s College, Oxford, reading History Ancient and Modern. This is a degree which I am particularly passionate about as it provides ample opportunity to make long term historical connections, and allows me to continue to work with classical texts. My degree grew naturally out of my A-Levels - History, Latin, and Greek - in which I achieved three A*s. I also attained straight 9s at GCSE. My most recent studies at Oxford have included the Late Antique Near East and Herodotus, and I was awarded various college essay awards for work this year.

Alongside my degree, I sing with the choir of Worcester College and am involved in student journalism: both are areas in which Oxbridge proves to be a uniquely exciting space. Aiding people in obtaining access to such opportunities drives my involvement in Oxbridge-specific admissions tutoring.

Ultimately, one of the greatest assets for any university experience and beyond is a personal enthusiasm for a subject, and that is what I hope to facilitate in tutees. My commitment to tutoring stems from my enthusiasm for the intersectional nature of my degree and so I hope that each tutorial will produce exciting connections between different interests; this must, of course, be complemented by the development of secure and applicable knowledge and technique. I have always enjoyed the dynamic interaction of one-on-one education, whichever end of it I was on, and I tutor History, Greek, and Latin from Primary School up to A-Level.

I have also taken on mentoring roles in debating and public speaking: having won the National ESU Churchill public speaking competition in 2022, I know the value of clear, concise, and effective communication.
