Flynn

Hi, I’m Flynn. I’m currently in my third year studying Mathematics at Cambridge, with my main areas of interest being in Abstract Algebra, as well as Applied Probability and Statistics. I am hoping to continue my studies next year as part of the Part III Maths master’s programme at Cambridge. Outside of my studies, I enjoy taking part in sports at both a University and College level, having competed on the University Blues team for both Swimming and Modern Pentathlon, as well as having rowed in the Queens’ College Men’s First Boat. I have held many positions of responsibility within the University, as Social Secretary and Alumni President for Cambridge University Swimming Club; as Social Secretary and Lower Boat Captain responsible for coaching novices at Queens’ College Boat Club; and as Freshers’ Representative at Queens’ College, where I was responsible for planning and running freshers’ week activities at the college.

At A-level, I studied Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics (All A*), and I also studied Biology at AS-Level (A). As part of my application to Cambridge, I sat the STEP II and III papers, where I attained grades of S and 1 respectively. I also have extensive experience in the Maths and Physics Olympiads and the UKMT Maths Challenges, having participated in these at school. I represented Ireland in the 2019 International Linguistics Olympiad after placing third in the national competition (AILO), and I have since assisted in setting question papers for AILO.

I have been tutoring for the past 4 years in Maths and Physics at GCSE and A-level, as well as in University admissions, where I have helped a number of students attain University offers. I enjoy being able to share my passion for mathematics and the sciences with others, as I believe it is my role as a tutor not just to cover the required content for a subject for a student, but to try and instill an appreciation for the wider significance and application of the subject. Particularly for mathematics, where examinations tend to be formula-driven without touching on the deeper aspects of the subject, I’ve found that providing an opportunity for students to explore maths in a way that engages with their interests and questions around the subject can be immensely rewarding in providing a more profound understanding of mathematics, making the transition to higher study an easier jump to tackle.
