Hi, I'm Ed, and I am currently in my second year studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge after scoring 69.9% in year one. I am particularly interested in environmental science, with a focus on mathematical modelling, innovative engineering and structural solutions, and conservation. Before coming to Cambridge, I achieved 4 A*s at A Level in Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, alongside 10 GCSEs at grade 9. I was also an Academic, Sports and Music Scholar at Canford School.

My academic interests at Cambridge have spanned Evolutionary Biology, Physiology of Organisms, Earth Sciences and Mathematics, giving me a broad scientific perspective which I particularly enjoy bringing into my teaching. I believe that some of the most interesting and useful learning happens at the boundaries between subjects, and I therefore encourage students not only to master their specification but also to understand the ideas and principles which connect different areas of science.

I have 3+ years of experience providing private tuition, from 11+ and school entrance and scholarship examinations through to GCSE and A Level, as well as Oxbridge preparation. I have particular experience with academic scholarship papers, with successful students gaining places at schools such as Eton. I specialise in Oxbridge Natural Sciences, Biology and Earth Sciences admissions. Having recently gone through the Cambridge admissions process myself, I offer support with ESAT preparation, personal statements, academic exploration and mock interviews. I believe there is particular value in working with someone who has first-hand experience of the tests and interviews themselves and understands the process from a recent applicant's perspective. My approach to admissions preparation goes beyond simply practising interview questions: I encourage students to engage with scientific papers, studies and relevant developments in science so that they can develop the curiosity, confidence and intellectual flexibility required for an Oxbridge interview. I enjoy helping students become comfortable thinking aloud and tackling unfamiliar scientific problems and have had 2 successful applicants in the past year.

A distinctive feature of my tutoring is the emphasis I place on getting to know each student individually. I have found that building a strong rapport allows me to understand how a student thinks, what motivates them and where they can make the greatest progress. I aim to combine the clarity and structure needed for strong examination performance with genuine enthusiasm for the subject, encouraging students to become increasingly independent and curious learners.

Outside academics, I have always maintained a broad range of interests. At Cambridge I play hockey and have represented the University, while also serving as a hockey captain and club treasurer. I am also an Oboe Scholar at Jesus College. I have worked as a sailing instructor and competed nationally in dinghy sailing. Beyond this, I have spent time travelling and volunteering internationally, including coral conservation work in Raja Ampat and teaching in schools in Sri Lanka.
