Clare McFall, Chemistry - University of Oxford
Hi, I’m Clare! I’m a first-year DPhil student in Chemistry, having also completed my undergraduate Master’s degree in Chemistry at Oxford. My research focuses on using cell-based expression systems to produce proteins and analyse them with mass spectrometry. During my Master’s thesis, I investigated the evolutionary history of a specific cardiac protein, and I hope to continue exploring similar biochemical pathways throughout my PhD. This work has given me a strong interdisciplinary background and the ability to connect complex scientific concepts to real research.
Alongside my studies, I’m a keen hockey player. I’m now entering my fifth season with the University hockey club, which I find is a fantastic way to take a break from studying and catch up with friends. I am also an Outreach Ambassador for the Chemistry Department, delivering fun and accessible chemistry workshops to schools in and around Oxfordshire.
I tutor Chemistry, Biology, and Maths at GCSE and A-level, and I also offer support with university applications and interview preparation. My teaching style aims to spark genuine curiosity and interest in the subject matter so students feel motivated, confident, and engaged in their learning. I work with students to set achievable goals on a realistic timescale, boosting their confidence and ensuring our lessons remain focused, effective, and personalised to their needs.
