Caitlin, Classics - University of Oxford

Hi! I’m Caitlin, and I just graduated from the University of Oxford with a First-Class Classics degree (Course I) from Somerville college where I was awarded the Shaw-Lefevre exhibition for academic achievement and a Mary Somerville award. I was particularly proud to place 9th in my cohort in finals, having specialised in literature and history in both Ancient Greek and Latin. Alongside my studies I led student magazines in arts and diplomacy, pursuing my passions for writing and international affairs.

Before university, I achieved top grades in my pre-Us of English Literature (D1), Latin (D2), and Ancient Greek (D2), and 9s/A*s (mixed grading system) across all 12 of my GCSEs. Having received offers from all the schools for which I sat 16+ entrance exams, I am also confident in tutoring for these less common school entrance exams.

I’ve had experience tutoring primary school children introductory courses for Latin, and at university I’ve taught students across all years how to edit and write pieces for publication. Having gone through rigorous training for the Oxford classics admission exams, which involved going back to basics for both ancient languages, I understand the value of mastering the foundational elements in order to excel. My goal is to empower students to feel confident to tackle any challenge themselves, which is why I have a technique-focussed approach across both language and literature. An individualisation of this approach means I can provide structured support and guidance to less confident students, while challenging higher-achieving students to stretch their critical skills and independent thinking. Ultimately, I hope to create a difference not only in students’ attainment, but in their approach to learning by encouraging cross-curricular thinking and creating links to students’ own interests. I tutor in English Literature, Latin, and Ancient Greek to A-level, with specialist Oxbridge and 16+ entrance exam preparation.
