Alasdair, History and English - University of Oxford
Hello! I'm Alasdair and I'm a History & English graduate of the University of Oxford. Currently, I am undertaking my MFA Acting degree at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
I have worked as a Tutor for over 5 years, supporting students with weekly sessions in English, History, Drama and Music to local and international students from ages 8-18. I have supported pre-university admissions tests, personal statements, interview practice, A-Level, GCSE, 11+ and LAMDA exams.
As well as tutoring over the past few years, I have worked as a Teaching Assistant and Boarding Assistant. As Teaching Assistant, I supported classes in the Drama department (from ages 10-18), tutored A-Level Drama students one-to-one through their performance and written work, and led extra-curricular Drama. As Boarding Assistant, I was responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students ages 8-16, assisting students with homework, and supporting international boarders pastorally.
Academically, I am interested in a range of subjects. As a History & English graduate, I have always enjoyed the benefit of spreading my net wide. In History, I studied subjects such as Anglo-Saxon Britain and the history of Western political philosophy (punctuated by Aristotle, Hobbes, Rousseau), and in English Language and Literature, I studied subjects from conceptual linguistics to Early Modern sermon writing. For my dissertation, I studied the historiographical and literary styles of JFK assassination-conspiracy theories.
A child's self-assurance has been one of my priorities since a young age, as the eldest of four siblings. My aim is that a young person feel themselves as much as possible. I became a tutor because I wanted to support children and young adults to feel comfortable in themselves and proud of their capabilities. With experience of teaching, pastoral concerns, and a range of extracurricular activities, I am able to offer a rich teaching experience; one that doesn't just focus on academic development, but hopefully, the student's development as a well-rounded individual.
